Nowadays, many supermarkets are selling basic food products rather than locally produced food. While this trend can be seen in a negative light in some respects, I believe the selling imported products is, for the most part, a change for the better.
There are two principal reasons why this trend can be deemed favourable. One of them is greater variety for consumers. The sale of imported food is said to provide access to tropical fruits, seafood, spices, and international products. Another reason is more competitive prices, as some imported products are cheaper due to mass production which allows consumers to save money.
However, by looking at the trend from a different perspective, I believe that it is not without its demerits. The main reason would be environmental damage because imported food travels long distances before reaching consumers. Secondly, foreign food products may have lower freshness and quality. Local food is often fresher and tastes better because it does not require long-distance transportation.
To conclude, while this trend has some advantages such as variety and lower prices, it also has negative environmental and quality-related impacts.
