Band 8+: The effects of excessive social media use on young people

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Have you ever wondered why so many young people spend hours scrolling through social media without feeling bored? Indeed, in today’s digitally driven world, these platforms have become an integral part of daily life, allowing users to stay connected and informed. However, excessive reliance on social media may undermine self-confidence and weaken real-life interactions among young people.

One of the most significant effects is the decline in self-confidence. One of the most significant effects is the decline in self-confidence. In other words, many young individuals experience a diminished sense of self-worth, whereby their self-evaluation becomes increasingly shaped by external validation rather than their own intrinsic values. For example, when constantly exposed to carefully curated images of success and beauty on social media, they are more likely to engage in unfavorable comparisons with others, which can make them feel inferior. As a result, this persistent pattern of comparison gradually erodes their confidence and fosters a growing sense of dissatisfaction with their own lives.

Another major consequence is the deterioration of face-to-face communication skills. More specifically, this refers to a gradual decline in young people’s ability to communicate effectively in various real-life situations, including expressing their thoughts clearly, maintaining natural conversations, and responding appropriately in social situations. As they spend more time engaging in online communication, they become less familiar with direct interpersonal exchanges in the real world. For instance, while they may communicate confidently through messages or social media comments, many struggle with initiating or sustaining conversations in face-to-face settings. As a result, the deterioration of face-to-face communication skills can lead to social awkwardness and reduced confidence in real-life interactions, making it increasingly difficult for young people to engage in natural conversations with others. In the long run, this weakened ability to communicate in person can hinder their capacity to build meaningful and lasting relationships.

In conclusion, excessive use of social media can negatively affect young people by damaging their self-confidence and impairing their social interaction skills. It is therefore important for individuals to become fully aware of these risks and take proactive steps to regulate their screen time, so that social media use does not undermine their mental well-being or hinder their real-world social development.
