Band 7+: Some people believe that students should be required to wear uniforms in school, while others argue that uniforms restrict individuality and self-expression. What is your opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Wearing uniforms to school has somewhat become universal grounds. Such regulation promotes conformity and identity as to how polite students should look like. However, what if wearing uniforms is omitted from the school’s agenda? This essay will discuss the likelihood of what would happen if every school were to apply uniform-free rules to the school system according to my perspective.

Uniforms are a symbol of compliance which completely contradicts the definition of self-expression, however their existence has somewhat set a breaking ground for students that come from different backgrounds. For instance, wearing uniforms intrinsically shows that every student is equal, where one worth does not supersede the others. Applying a uniform-free rule to the school grounds will indirectly develop disparities across students with different financial backgrounds, promoting a group separation between both the lacking and the wealthy, which is likely to perpetuate competition and hate among students out of “jealousy”

Uniforms are also necessary because school is a place of education. Wearing casual clothes won’t be appropriate as one’s appearance has the possibility of distracting other students, both breaking their focus and losing the grasp of ongoing subjects during the class period. This implication has serious consequences for a student’s academic performance, which would be detrimental if such a rule was to be implemented daily. Allowing such a rule also serves as an irony as to how such a place is losing its essence of what it was initially known to be a place to “learn”, to a place for “showing off your outfits”.

In conclusion, it should be normal if students wear their preferable outfits only for occasions that are not school-related, as aborting this traditional rule turns out to have serious repercussions towards both the value of school as a place of education and student’s wellbeing. Wearing uniforms should remain within the school’s norms.
