Band 7+: Many people go through life doing work that they hate or have no talent for. Why does this happen? What are the consequences of this situation? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience

A lot of people around the world have a job that is not in line with their interests or potency. This essay will focus on the main causes and effects of this situation.

The first leading factor is family pressures. In most Asian countries such as China, many parents tend to push their kids to become a doctor or a lawyer. This behaviour cannot be separated from the social standards that consider those professions more prestigious than the others. In this case, children are encouraged to study subjects that may help them in getting the reputable occupations in the future rather than being supported in developing their true talents and passions. Secondly, financial conditions also play an important role in determining someone’s career. Some people who are not economically privileged often cannot afford learning institutions of their choice and are forced to study in more inexpensive places. They are also apt to find employment that is likely to get them out of poverty, no matter whether the job suits their likings and skills or not.

Several consequences are possible to happen due to working in an uncongenial work. Firstly, employees who do too much work that they do not like may experience job stress. This can result in physical and mental illnesses. Besides that, workers who are not passionate in their profession tend to underperform and deliver low quality work, which can affect society and not just the workers themselves. For instance, many teachers in public schools in Indonesia often do not care about their students’ behaviour and only teach the subjects without making sure that their students understand the lessons. They even frequently just ask the pupils to learn on their own instead of teaching them.

To conclude, a person doing a distasteful occupation is driven by family aspirations or financial circumstances. As this can affect not only the employees themselves but also their profession and the public as a whole, we need to assure that the aptitudes and abilities of individuals are acknowledged and supported in order to realise a well grown society.
