The question of whether climate change has an adverse impact on business or creates more business opportunities has become a hotly debated topic in modern society. While this trend may have certain benefits for enterprises, its drawbacks related to rising costs and damaged infrastructure should be considered more carefully.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why climate change enhances a company’s development. One major benefit is due to escalating demand for beverages during extreme climatic conditions. When the temperature rises up to 39 to 40 degrees Celsius in a region, people tend to purchase refreshing drinks such as milk tea or soda more frequently to stay hydrated. For instance, Mixue, a company specializing in beverages based in China, attracted thousands of customers in scorching summer within just one month of launching. Furthermore, private companies can take initiatives to restore damage caused by natural disasters by mounting campaigns. To be specific, by raising collective action from communities, or mobilizing staff to participate in recovery activities, private organizations can enhance their brand awareness as well as create a strong public image, thereby rendering their products more visible in the market.
On the other hand, proponents of negative effects to business resulting from climate change argue that extreme weather events can lead to rising costs. In particular, if a region is subject to continual warm spells, the demand for the use of air-conditioners may increase dramatically, especially in urban centers. Consequently, this increasing demand leads to higher levels of spending for electricity costs and maintenance expenses, which may encourage companies to opt for downsizing staff to reduce costs. Another common concern is that natural catastrophes often result in considerable damage to infrastructure. This can be seen in Japan, where many cities suffer from annual volcanic eruptions, floods and other extreme natural events. This destruction can lead to relocation of companies and substantial maintenance costs, which can become financial burdens for start-ups.
In conclusion, although climate change creates enormous opportunities for businesses to thrive, I am strongly convinced that it often causes more negative effects such as expensive operation costs and damaged facilities.
