Band 6+: Some people think that the best way to reduce traffic congestion is to increase the price of petrol, while others believe that there are other effective ways to reduce traffic. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a significant divergence of opinion regarding whether increasing the cost of petrol is the most effective way to reduce traffic congestion while it is argued by some that high price of petrol can discourage the use of private vehicles, others maintain the opposite stance, believing that there are many effective ways to mitigate traffic congestion. This essay delves into both perspectives while demonstrating why I align with the latter view.

Proponents of increasing the cost of fossil fuel think that this is a financial deterrent, which can shift peple’s preference from using conventional vehicles to public transport and electric cars, thereby limiting unnescessary journeys. However, as the demand for travel for work and study continues to grow, people are willing to pay higher commuting costs to meet there daily needs. Furthermore, electric cars can not travel long distance due to a lack of charging stations.

On the other hand, viable alternatives can tackle the root of the issue. Goverments can actively raise people’s awareness about traffic issues, there by ecouraging them to adopt eco-friendly habits. Authorities can offer financial incenitves such as: travel discounts for sutdents and worker, which can encourage them to switch from personal automobiles to public transportation. In addition, urban decentralization ( moving schools, hospitals, etc from city centre) and rising remote working arrangements to disincentivize private car ownership.

In conclusion, I assume that increasing the cost of petrol create a short-term economic deterrent, but a multi-faceted approach is a long-term anf sustainable solution.
