Although some people believe that environmental protection is the responsibility of government officials, it is not the role of individuals, as they can do too little. I would argue that it is the responsibility of politicians to take protection of the environment. for several compelling reasons.
One of the most persuasive arguments in favour of this view is that authorities can implement strict rules or enforce systemic changes. This is largely because governments are able to pass binding legislation such as emission caps, plastic bans, and carbon taxes, which encourage millions of individuals and businesses to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. As a consequence, major problems of cities, such as greenhouse gas emissions and others, become a lower level of pollution, and it protects natural ecosystems. For example, research conducted by Harvard University found that countries with stricter environmental regulations tend to have lower levels of pollution. Japan, particularly cities such as Tokyo, demonstrated how strict recycling policies and emission standards can contribute to a cleaner environment.
A further reason to support this position is that government officials should take control over infrastructure and industries. In other words, only governments can regulate large-scale polluters like factories, power plants, and corporations. Without this, governments might experience a great decline in their overall growth and ecosystems, as individuals are not able to shut down a coal plant or regulate industrial emissions. For instance, Sweden has implemented strict environmental regulations and expanded the use of renewable energy, as a result, these measures have helped reduce industrial pollution and improved air quality.
Admittedly, opponents of this view argue that protecting the environment is the responsibility of individuals. However, this argument is not entirely convincing because environmental issues are often caused by large industries rather than individuals whose actions alone are insufficient to tackle large-scale environmental problems.
In conclusion, although small actions done by people have some merits, I firmly believe that government officials should take protection of the environment because they can implement strict regulations and take control over industries to reduce industrial pollution.
