In recent years, it is widely believed that animals should not be kept in zoos and they have to be closed. I partly agree that animals should be free to live in wild life, however, this development could affect scarce species.
On the one hand, one of the positive developments of keeping animals in zoos is that numerous scarce species require protection in zoos from being hunted by irresponsible individuals in wild life or forests, this problem may cause rare animals such as rhinos or elephants to become endangered. For example, in Indonesia numerous elephant’s tusks are taken by hunters to make traditional medication or collections. As a result, many elephants feel stress and lead to extinction. Moreover, keeping rare animals can be beneficial for them as many zoologists can preserve and take care of them by providing safe places and conservation program which can grow the animals population significantly.
On the other hand, I strongly believe that not every animals should be kept in zoos because a large number of common animals such as monkeys or penguins often do not have free activities while in zoos. This issue may negatively lead to stress and lose the natural behaviour in the long terms as wild animals such as penguins have to migrate rather than living in restricted area. For instance, many zoos in Indonesia often conduct penguin shows for entertainment, however, penguins often get forced by the trainers to perform dangerous actions. As a result, penguins might get stress and violate the animals rights.
In conclusion, although zoos are crucial in preventing scarce animals from extinction, in my opinion, this development should not restrict the animals movement and for entertainment purpose to avoid stress and animals’ rights.
