Positive And Negative

Band 9: More and more universities are replacing face-to-face teaching with online courses. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, an increasing number of universities have begun offering online courses as an alternative to traditional classroom instruction. While this shift has made higher education more accessible and flexible, I believe that replacing face-to-face teaching entirely is a negative development because it diminishes the quality of interaction and limits students’ personal and social growth.

One of the primary drawbacks of online education is the reduction in direct communication between students and lecturers. In conventional classrooms, learners can ask questions spontaneously, participate in discussions, and receive immediate feedback. Such interactions not only deepen understanding but also encourage critical thinking and active engagement. By contrast, online courses often rely on pre-recorded lectures or virtual meetings, which can make students feel isolated and less motivated. As a result, the educational experience may become less effective, particularly for subjects that require extensive discussion or practical application.

Another reason why this trend should be viewed negatively is that universities serve purposes beyond academic instruction. Higher education institutions provide an environment in which students develop essential interpersonal skills, build professional networks, and learn to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. These experiences are difficult to replicate in a virtual setting. For example, many students form lifelong friendships and establish valuable career connections through campus activities, seminars, and group projects. If universities were to rely exclusively on online teaching, students might graduate with strong academic knowledge but lack important social competencies that are highly valued in the workplace.

Admittedly, online courses offer considerable advantages, including greater flexibility and lower costs. They are especially beneficial for individuals living in remote areas or those who must balance their studies with employment. Nevertheless, these benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages associated with the loss of meaningful human interaction and the broader university experience.

In conclusion, although online education has made university learning more convenient and accessible, I believe that the replacement of face-to-face teaching with online courses is an undesirable development. Universities should embrace technology as a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, traditional teaching methods.
