Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 8+: In some countries, more and more adults are living with their parents after graduating from college, university, or even after finding a job. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In many countries, individuals in their early adulthood tend to move out and live independently after graduating from school. This phenomenon is primarily driven by the accessibility to workplaces and a sense of comfort and independence it brings. Although there are certain drawbacks, I firmly believe that the advantages ultimately outweigh the disadvantages.

One of the contributing factors to this trend is that young adults desire to find accommodation that is adjacent to their workplace. This is because parents’ houses can be far from where they work or inaccessible by public transports, which is time-consuming and more likely that those people will get stuck in traffic congestion. Therefore, they prefer to rent or buy properties to commute to work more conveniently. Furthermore, this development can also stem from the fact that graduates find moving out and living alone comfortable and independent. In other words, living a solitary life can fulfill their desires in several ways. To illustrate, young adults can have more flexible time, wake up late or work overnight without fear of affecting others’ schedules. Moreover, they are able to make their own decisions and prioritize personal preferences regarding furniture and home layout.

However, this trend can have some potential disadvantages, one of which is that it weakens family connections, and this can be effectively addressed through frequent family visits during the weekend and holidays, or making video calls and sending messages via social platforms. By contrast, young adults can gain significant benefits from living on their own, including the acquisition of essential life skills. Specifically, financial management, cooking skills, doing housework, and fundamental repair skills are what they may acquire when living solitarily, which enables them to gain more self-confidence in solving problems and improve personal growth. Therefore, I firmly contend that the overall merits remain more substantial than the demerits.

In conclusion, while this phenomenon is mainly attributed to the two mentioned reasons and may lead to weakened family bonds. I firmly maintain that its transformative benefits in terms of holistic personal development far outweigh any temporary negative aspects.
