The pie chart presents the popularity of different sports among students in French secondary schools over the period from 1990 to 2010.
Overall, swimming remained the most popular sport throughout the period, whereas tennis was consistently the least popular. Football, basketball and other sports occupied the middle positions in terms of popularity.
Looking first at 1990, swimming was the most popular sport, accounting for 39% of students. This was followed by other sports, at 25%, while basketball and football both accounted for 16%, Tennis had the smallest proportion, at just 4%.
Looking at 2000, it is clear that swimming was still the most popular sport. Other sports accounted for 23%, which was almost the same as in the previous decade. The popularity of football increased by 2%, reaching 18%, whereas basketball decreased significantly by 9%. Meanwhile, tennis remained at the same level, at 4%.
Turning to the figures for 2010, swimming continued to hold the top position. It was followed by basketball, with the figure standing at 25%, while other sports made up 19%. Football and tennis were the least popular, at 8% and 7%, respectively.
