There are divergent opinions regarding the subjects that university students should study. While some individuals advocate for students’ freedom to pursue their interests, others argue that it is imperative to limit university education to disciplines deemed beneficial for the future, particularly those related to science and technology. This essay will discuss both perspectives and provide my viewpoint on the matter.
On one hand, proponents of unrestricted subject choices argue that university education should serve as a platform for students to explore diverse fields and nurture their intellectual capabilities. Such an approach enables individuals to expand their knowledge and skills, thereby enhancing their problem-solving abilities. Conversely, proponents of a more pragmatic approach argue that educational institutions should primarily focus on offering subjects that are perceived as pertinent to the workforce and societal advancement, particularly those related to science and technology. They contend that nurturing a workforce equipped with expertise in scientific and technological domains is crucial for addressing contemporary challenges and fueling societal progress. Indeed, individuals with specialized skills in these fields play a pivotal role in driving technological advancements and addressing complex societal issues. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that an exclusive focus on utilitarian subjects may lead to a lack of diversity in the skill sets of the workforce, potentially hindering the development of certain non-technical but equally valuable competencies.
Taking into account the aforementioned perspectives, it is my contention that a balanced approach to university education is imperative.
