Band 8+: Some people believe that reading is always a good habit. Others feel it depends on which books a person is reading. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a continuing debate regarding the benefits of reading, with some arguing that it is always a valuable habit, while others contend that its value depends on the content of the books being read. In my own perspective, I believe that the benefits of reading are contingent upon the specific books being read. Thus, in this essay, I will delve into the various arguments regarding the effects of different types of reading materials.

Proponents of the view that reading is universally beneficial argue that it is an essential habit that fosters personal growth and development. They posit that regardless of the content, reading enhances language skills and cognitive abilities. Moreover, they assert that individuals who are avid readers are generally more astute and knowledgeable than those who do not engage in regular reading.

On the contrary, I am of the opinion that the value of reading is heavily influenced by the nature of the materials being read. It is imperative to be discerning in choosing reading materials that contribute to intellectual and moral enhancement. While reading can indeed be a catalyst for personal advancement, the content being absorbed plays a crucial role in shaping one’s mindset and values. For instance, certain books may convey negative or harmful messages, such as promoting self-destructive behavior, and therefore should be scrutinized, particularly in the case of children. This is underscored by evidence suggesting that certain literary genres may inadvertently encourage suicidal thoughts and actions.

In conclusion, while there are staunch advocates of indiscriminate reading, there is a growing awareness of the importance of selective reading. Ultimately, the choice of reading materials significantly impacts an individual’s personal growth and well-being. Therefore, it is essential to exercise prudence and discretion in the selection of reading materials to maximize the positive impact of reading habits
