In contemporary times, many young students consider gaining practical experience before commencing their higher education. They seek to explore the world outside the confines of academic institutions and acquire practical knowledge. I firmly believe that this decision is a judicious one as it allows them to enrich their understanding through practical experiences. Although this approach may pose certain challenges, its benefits far outweigh any drawbacks for the majority of students. In this essay, I will elucidate both perspectives and subsequently present my viewpoint.
To commence, students can broaden their horizons by interacting with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and by engaging in travel. Through encountering various cultures and lifestyles across the globe, they can gain insights that would be invaluable during their higher studies. For instance, as students enroll in colleges or universities, they may encounter peers from different countries or cities. Thus, the experiences gained through travel could enable them to easily adapt and connect with fellow students. Furthermore, work experience can enable students to earn money to support their college fees. This, in turn, instills an appreciation for the value of money and the realization that higher education comes with significant costs. Additionally, for middle-class families unable to afford higher education, students may come to understand the financial strain and value of education, thereby stabilizing their financial status.
On the contrary, it is often contended that taking a gap year can be detrimental to a student’s career. Some students, lacking motivation and goals, may while away their time in leisure activities and become complacent. Moreover, students lacking guidance and motivation may falter and struggle to achieve their aspirations. Additionally, taking a break in studies might create the need to explain or justify the gap year, potentially impacting one’s academic and career trajectory negatively.
In conclusion, despite the potential drawbacks associated with taking a gap year before pursuing higher education, I am of the strong opinion that practical knowledge and experience significantly enhance students’ capabilities and self-awareness. Moreover, the ability to engage with diverse individuals and understand their perspectives is highly relevant and beneficial for navigating challenges in practical life.
