Band 7+: The manufacturing and use of cars damages the environment but their popularity is increasing. Why is this? How could this be controlled?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In this day and age, it is evident that using cars can take a heavy toll on the environment;however, their prevalence is still growing considerably. My essay will analyse the root rationale behind this trend before proposing effective measures to mitigate the environmental problems that cars cause.

There are compelling reasons why cars attract a multitude of owners regardless of their adverse impact on the environment. First of all, due to their flexibility and convenience, many individuals have the preference for possessing cars to accommodate their daily life. It is apparent that cars are designed with limited capacities, which creates certain privacy as well as comfortability while travelling. Thanks to this characteristic, drivers can actively commute to their desirable destinations at their own pace. This feature on the other hand lacks in current public transports such as bus and train, making people feel annoyed and uncomfortable. In addition, in many developing nations, cars are often intertwined with luxury and wealth, which might increase the ambition for possessing one among individuals to show off themselves. It is also proved scientifically that people thrive to fulfill their optimal demand for self-actualization, which can be achieved by owning private cars.

In order to reverse the environmental issues that this trend causes, several solutions operated by the government should be taken into account. First and foremost, it is imperative that the state allocate budget for developing public means of transport as well as enhancing transportation infrastructure. In particular, there should be more stations or bus stops to serve a variety of travelling demands from residents. Besides, public methods of transport also need to be equipped with more cutting-edge facilities aiming at increasing the comfortability of passengers. Moreover, the government should also impose higher costs on fuel used to run most private vehicles to prevent people from driving frequently. This particularly focuses on the middle class people as they would prioritize covering other essential costs such as education or healthcare in lieu of spending a huge amount of money on cars. Ultimately, those individuals would divert to utilize public means of transport to save money, which translates to a reduced number of cars on the road and improvement of the overall air quality.

In conclusion, despite posing a threat to the environment, cars are still one of the most popular vehicles due to their convenience and flexibility. In order to alleviate the adverse environmental impact of drivers, there is a need for the government to subsidize to promote more holistic traffic infrastructure and raise the fuel costs to reduce the number of car users.
