Band 9: After graduation many students take a year to travel. Some think that it would be more useful to work for a year. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a view that students from developed countries should use their gap year to travel rather than work part-time. I completely agree with this opinion, as traveling provides unique opportunities for personal growth and helps individuals develop important leisure skills.

One reason why traveling during a gap year is beneficial is the chance to step out of one’s comfort zone. Exploring new cultures and unfamiliar environments encourages adaptability and creativity. For example, while traveling, students often encounter different customs, languages, and challenges that require problem-solving and open-mindedness. These experiences shape their personalities, making them more confident and resourceful. By comparison, working part-time during this period, though valuable, does not provide the same level of exposure to new and enriching experiences. Therefore, travel is a more rewarding use of a gap year.

Another reason why traveling is more advantageous than working is the opportunity to develop leisure skills. Many people, focused solely on work or study, struggle to relax during holidays or retirement, often feeling restless or unfulfilled. Traveling during a gap year allows students to learn how to enjoy unstructured time, live in the moment, and engage in meaningful activities. For instance, they may pick up hobbies, meet diverse people, or learn to navigate without a rigid schedule. These skills are difficult to develop later in life when career and family responsibilities dominate.

In conclusion, I believe that students should prioritize traveling during their gap year. It offers personal growth and helps cultivate leisure skills, which are essential for a balanced and fulfilling life.
