Turning down job applicants by depending on their age is considered against the law in several nations. From my perspective, this rule’s advantages can outweigh its disadvantages , and in this essay I will explain my opinion.
Regarding the positive side, this regulation encourages companies to recruit based on applicants’ personal experience and performance instead of discarding for how old they are. In the past, sorting by age can be a reliable method to hire a qualified person for the job. This is because most people at that time had a similar curriculum at school and lacked learning materials. On the contrary, at present, the improvement of technology and education has changed the way people learn. Many students today can choose the suitable subjects depending on their strengths and weaknesses. As a result, despite being similar in age, each person’s experience can vary in different fields and levels.
The world today witnesses the rising percentage of elders, and soon, this percentage will exceed the proportion of youngsters. However, for example, many companies in countries where they are allowed to turn down senior job seekers are still recruiting young internships. They hire these employees on the pretext of reducing payments for salary since workers at this group are not only enthusiastic but also can be paid less due to the lack of experience. Therefore, older people struggle to find a vacancy for themselves. This is when the government should carry out solutions to cope with this problem, and banning discrimination against different age groups can be a good one.
In conclusion, recruiting should rely on people’s capabilities that fit vacancies’ requirements but not how old they are.
