Overall, while the proportion of students attending Community Schools increased significantly over the period, all other school types experienced a consistent decline in enrolment.
In 2000, Voluntary-controlled schools accounted for the largest share of pupils, at 52%. This figure fell sharply to 38% in 2005 and further decline to just 20% by 2009. Grammar Schools showed a similar downward trend, dropping from 24% in 2000 to 19% in 2005, and then to 12% by 2009. Likewise, the percentage of students attending Specialist Schools declined slightly, from 12% in 2000 to 11% in 2005, and 10% in 2009.
In contrast, Community Schools experienced a dramatic increase in enrolment. Starting at just 12% in 2000, the figure nearly tripled to 32% in 2005 and surged to 58% by 2009, making them the most attended school type by the end of the period.
