The presented table gives information on number of learners living in UK gaining English language teacher training qualifications through TEFL and Cambridge CELTA and other degrees in 2007/8 and 2008/9 and the percentage of male qualifiers in it. Data has been calibrated in numbers and percentage. Overall, it can be clearly seen that female enrolment have been more than twice that of male in both the years and the portion of male qualifiers was higher in TEFL exam.
To begin with, in 2007/8 18,460 female applied in TEFL training while only 5,382 applied in Cambridge training. Moreover, only 6,870 male applied for TEFL training and nearly one-sixth of it applied for Cambridge. Overall, the percentage of male qualifiers in this year was only 24.7%, of which 26.9% in TEFL and 17.3% in Cambridge test.
Furthermore, in 2008/9 women enrolment in TEFL decreased a little by 14 while for Cambridge training it increased slightly and reached to 5878. Likewise, a decline was also seen among male candidates for both training programs. The difference was nearly of 300. Additionally, male qualifiers percentage decreased by 2%.
