Overall,the proportion of elderly people is expected to increase significantly in all regions.Europe had the large percentage of people aged 60+ in 2000 and is predicted to remain the oldest region by 2050,while Africa consistently shows the lowest percentage,despite the noticeable growth.
In 2000,Europe had recorded the highest proportion of elderly people at 22%,followed by Asia 12% and North America 11%.Similarly,Ocean had the same figure as North America,whereas Africa and Latin America had the lowest proportions,5% and 7 respectively.In terms of whole world,13 % of the population was aged 60 and over at that time.
By 2050,all regions are forecast to experience substantial increases.Europe is expected to rise 31%,while Asia and North America will reach 28% and 26% respectively.Oceania’s figure is expected to double to 22% and Latin America is predicted to grow to 18%.Although Africa will remain the youngest region,its elderly population is expected to more than double,reaching at 18%.The whole world average is forecast to increase considerably to 24%.
