Overall, we can see from the data that sciences, mathematics, literature and law were more popular among males. By contrast, social sciences, languages and the arts clearly appealed more to females. The only subject that both groups chose equally was humanities.
In science and mathematics, the proportion of males was significantly larger than females, with around 22000 and 20000 male students respectively, compared to fewer than 5000 females in mathematics. The similar pattern can be observed in literature and law with smaller gap between the number of two gender. Humanities was the most balanced subject chosen by the equal number of males and females.
On the other hand, female students showed strong preference toward language, with just under 25000 enrollers. It could be seen the same pattern in social sciences and the art, though the gap between the number of two gender was not as large as the former subject.
In general, it seems male pupils dominated technical and analytical subjects, while females tended to choose artistic and social subjects.
