The bar chart illustrates the proportion of men working in senior development positions in IBM, Microsoft, and Apple from 1980 to 2010.
Overall, all three companies experienced an upward trend in the percentage of male senior developers over the period, with IBM showing the most dramatic increase. Apple, meanwhile, remained the least male-dominated company for most of the years shown.
In 1980, IBM and Microsoft had very low percentages, both under 5%, whereas Apple was noticeably higher at around 10%. By 1990, the figures for all companies had grown moderately, reaching between 10% and 15%.
The most significant changes occurred after 1995. IBM saw a rapid rise from about 28% in 1995 to over 60% in 2010, which was the highest figure on the chart. Microsoft also increased steadily, moving from roughly 15% to around 45% during the same period. Apple’s growth, however, was more modest, rising from approximately 12% in 1995 to just over 20% by 2010.
In summary, while male participation in senior development roles increased in all three companies, IBM showed the sharpest and most substantial growth, particularly after 2000.
