The bar chart depicts the percentages of Japanese children in three age groups (5 – 8 years old, 9 – 11 years old, and 12 – 16 years old) participating in four activities – watching TV, reading, playing computer games, and riding a bike – in 2018.
Overall, watching TV was the most popular activity across most age groups, while playing computer games was the least favored. Additionally, there were notable differences in activity preferences between younger and older children.
When it comes to watching TV, the highest proportion was seen among 5 – 8 year – olds, at around 90%. For 9 – 11 year – olds and 12 – 16 year – olds, the percentages were slightly lower, at approximately 80% each. In contrast, playing computer games had the lowest participation rates. Only about 40% of 12 – 16 year – olds engaged in this activity, compared to around 60% of 5 – 8 year – olds and roughly 58% of 9 – 11 year – olds.
Regarding reading and riding a bike, 9 – 11 year – olds showed the greatest interest in reading, with about 72% participating. For 5 – 8 year – olds, the figure was around 65%, and for 12 – 16 year – olds, it was slightly lower at about 70%. As for riding a bike, 12 – 16 year – olds were the most enthusiastic, with nearly 82% taking part. The percentages for 5 – 8 year – olds and 9 – 11 year – olds were relatively lower, at about 65% and 63% respectively.
To sum up, watching TV was prevalent among Japanese children in 2018, whereas playing computer games was less popular. Moreover, younger children tended to prefer screen – based activities, while older children were more inclined towards reading and riding a bike.
