The diagram illustrates different kinds of music purchased in the USA in 2010, according to age groups.
Overall, it is clear that pop and rock music were most popular among young people aged 16 to 22, while classical music was preferred by the oldest age group (58+). Meanwhile, jazz remained the least popular genre across all age groups.
Looking first at the younger age groups, it can be seen that young people aged 16 to 22 were more interested in pop and rock music, purchasing approximately 5 million and 4 million recordings respectively. In contrast, sales of jazz and classical music were much lower, at about 2 million or less. Similarly, people aged 23 to 31 also showed a strong preference for pop and rock music, with sales of around 4 million and nearly 3.5 million respectively. Meanwhile, purchases of jazz and classical music were lower, at approximately 2 to 2.5 million.
Turning to the older age groups, a different pattern can be observed. Among people aged 32 to 45, pop and rock music remained fairly popular, with around 3 million sales. This was followed by jazz and classical music, each attracting roughly 2 million buyers. In contrast, sales figures for those aged 46 to 57 showed a decline in pop and rock music, while jazz and classical genres became slightly more popular. For the oldest group (58+), classical music was the most popular genre, reaching approximately 3 million sales, whereas the other types of music were less preferred.
