Overall, the percentage of car ownership in households increased steadily throughout the period. However, the number of families without cars decreased dramatically.
The proportion of households in the UK that owned a single car rose significantly from about 10% in 1951 to almost 45% by 1970. In contrast, from 1970 to 2007, this figure remained relatively stable at about 45-50%. Over the period 1951-1967, the share of families without cars experienced a sharp downward trend, falling from approximately 85% to almost 50%. By comparison, from 1967 to 2007, the percentage slightly fell from about 50% to almost 30%.
The share of homes that had two cars showed gradual growth over the period, from about 2% to approximately 28%. The number of households that had three or more cars experienced minimal increase throughout the period, jumping from roughly 0% to 8%.
