In general, the proportion of urban population increases in all areas over the period. Latin America has the highest figure during the years, whereas Asia and Africa showed the lowest percentage.
In 1950, about 30% of the whole world’s population live in the cities. This figure rose to around 47% in 2000 and is expected to reach approximately 60% by 2030. In Africa 10% of people lived in urban areas in 1950, but this numbers growth to nearly 40% in 2000 and is predicted to rise to 50% by 2030.
In Asia, the urban population grew from approximately 15% in 1950 to around 38% in 2000 and this figure will reach roughly 55% in the future. Meanwhile, Latin America experienced the highest figures, increasing from around 40% in 1950 to 70% in 2000, and it is projected to climb further to nearly 80% by 2030
