The bar chart illustrates the percentage of people living in urban areas in the whole world, Africa, Asia and Latin America in 1950 and 2000, along with predictions for 2030.
Overall, urban populations are expected to increase significantly in all regions during the period. Furthermore, Latin America recorded the highest urban population figures, while Africa and Asia had the lowest percentages.
In 1950, around 30% of the world’s population lived in cities, and this figure rose steadily to approximately 48% in 2000. It is forecast to reach 60% by 2030. Similarly, Africa experienced considerable growth, increasing from about 11% in 1950 to nearly 40% in 2000, before climbing further to just above 50% in 2030. Asia followed a similar trend, rising from roughly 13% to 39%, with a predicted increase to 56%.
Meanwhile, Latin America remained the most urbanised region, growing dramatically from approximately 42% in 1950 to 70% in 2000 and 80% in 2030.
