The bar chart compares six subjects, namely physics, astronomy, geology, biology, medicine, and veterinary medicine, at a UK university in terms of the numbers of male and female attendants in 2009.
In general, the gender gap occurs in all six fields. Especially, it is significant in physics, astronomy, and geology.
First, physics is a male-dominated subject where the number of men is nearly six times that of women, with 230 and 40, in that order. Besides, there are about 150 male research students partaking in astronomy, compared to nearly over 50 males in this section. Interestingly, the numbers of males in geology and astronomy reach parity at 150, while the figure for female counterparts is nearly half, around 75 students.
The largest number of both women and men take part in biology, with 200 and 240 persons, respectively. Meanwhile, in comparison with females (180 students), males attending medicine exceed 200. However, veterinary medicine is the least popular area in the university, with 75 men and 110 women.
