The line graph illustrates the number of incidents of three types of crime in England and Wales from 1970 to 2005.
Overall, car theft was the most common type of crime throughout the period, peaking in 1995, while all three types of crime ended the period at higher levers than they began. Despite some fluctuations, street robbery remained relatively low compared to the others.
The number of car theft rose sharply from 0.4 million in 1970 to a peak of 1.6 million in 1995, before falling back to 1.0 million by 2005. On the other hand, the number of house burglaries fluctuated, remaining just over 0.6 million from 1980 to 1995, before falling to 0.4 million. For the remainder of the period, it experienced a noticeable plunge and reached around 0.4 million in 2005.
Street robbery consistently recorded the lowest number of crimes throughout the period. It started at nearly zero and maintained the same level from 1970 to 1990. However, this figure rose noticeably to 0.2 million from then until in 2000. For the remainder of the period, number of street robbery incidents stayed relatively stable, ending at 0.2 million in 2005.
