This chart compares the proportion of British people interested in six different sports in 1995, 2000 and 2005.
Overall, foot remained the most popular sport, while golf had the lowest figures in three years. The figure for foot increased steadily, whereas other categories experienced more fluctuations.
It is clear that foot had the highest proportion in all three years with the figure being about 41% in 1995 brefore rising to 43% in 2000 and almost 45% in 2005. Although swim and rugby followed contrasting trends, they both showed an overall increase. In 1995, rugby accounted for 24%, slightly higher than swim at 23%. While the figure for rugby decreased then surged, that of swim increased before declining. However, both ended up at about 26% in 2005.
Regarding the categories that recorded an overall decrease, snooker and tennis accounted for relatively high figures in 1995 at around 30%, then both declined significantly, reaching 22% and 23% in 2005, respectively. Finally, golf’s figure remained the lowest. It stood at only about 18% in 1995 and then declined before slightly recovering to 16% in 2005.
