The pie chart and table show information about online shopping in Australia and New Zealand in 2012. The chart illustrates the proportion of customers choosing different types of websites, while the table gives figures for the reasons why people shopped online in the two countries.
Overall, it is clear that overseas websites were the most popular choice in both countries. The most common reason for shopping online was the lower price of goods, while other reasons were much less significant.
In Australia, almost two thirds of online shoppers (64%) bought from overseas websites. The figure for New Zealand was lower, at 50%. By contrast, a larger proportion of New Zealanders used both overseas and local websites (36% compared with 24% in Australia). Similarly, shopping only from local websites was slightly more common in New Zealand (14%) than in Australia (12%).
According to the table, lower price was the main factor influencing online shopping decisions in both countries, with 59% of Australians and 51% of New Zealanders giving this reason. Convenience was the second most common factor in Australia (23%), whereas in New Zealand a greater percentage of people (30%) shopped online because of the larger range of choice. Finally, only 2% of customers in each country gave other reasons for shopping online.
