The pie charts provide data on the proportion of water consumed for agricultural, industrial, and domestic purposes in six regions of the world.
Overall, agriculture accounts for over half of total water usage in most areas, making it the largest proportion, whereas industry is the dominant proportion at nearly 50% in Europe and North America.
Agriculture has a significant proportion of water consumption in Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia, each comprising roughly 84%, 88%, and 81%, respectively. Conversely, neither industrial nor domestic water usage exceeds 10% of total water usage in any of these three areas, except in Southeast Asia where industrial use reaches 12%. Notably, South America’s agriculture makes up a smaller proportion at 71%, but domestic and industrial use account for 19% and 10%, respectively, compared with the three regions mentioned above.
However, the purposes of water usage in North America and Europe differ significantly. In both areas, industry represents approximately half of water consumption (48% and 53%), followed by agriculture contributing only 39% and 32%. Meanwhile, the remaining share is divided between domestic use, taking up 13% and 15%—the smallest percentages.
