The charts compare the percentage of volunteers working in five different types of organizations in 2008 and 2014.
Overall, educational and environmental organizations were the most popular sectors in both years, although the proportion of volunteers in education declined over time. Meanwhile, participation in sports rose noticeably, while the figures for health care remained the lowest throughout the period.
In 2008, education accounted for the largest share of volunteers, at 24%. This was followed by environmental organizations, which attracted 21% of volunteers. Art and sport organizations recorded similar levels, at around one-sixth each, while health care had the smallest proportion, at 7%.
By 2014, environmental volunteering had increased slightly to 22%, allowing it to become the leading sector. Sports also saw a significant rise from 15% to 25%. In contrast, the figure for education fell sharply to 17%. Art organizations experienced a slight decline, while health care showed only a minimal increase, rising from 7% to 8%.
