The bar chart shows the percentage of government spending on roads and transport in four countries, namely Italy, Portugal, the UK and the USA, in the years 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.
Overall, Portugal and Italy spent a higher proportion of their budgets on roads and transport than the UK and the USA. In addition, spending in Portugal showed a general decrease over time, while the figure for the USA increased gradually.
In Italy, government spending was about 22% in 1990 and rose slightly to around 23% in 2000 before falling to approximately 19% in 2005. Portugal had the highest figure in 1990, at about 27%, but this number decreased steadily to around 20% by 2005.
By contrast, the UK spent the smallest percentage on transport and roads throughout the period. Its figure fluctuated slightly, ranging from about 8% to 12%. Meanwhile, spending in the USA increased from roughly 11% in 1990 to around 15% in 2005.
