Overall, the proportion of Australian students who were unemployed and pursuing higher levels of education generally witnessed varying decreases, while the opposite was in the case of those who were employed.
In terms of the categories which generally decreased over the surveyed period, half of the Australian secondary school leavers chose to continue their academic career, which accounted for the largest figure in 1980. This number dropped to only 37% after 20 years. Meanwhile, the figure for those who were unemployed was the smallest. This figure had experienced a slight increase, from 10% in 1980 to 12% before decreasing to 8% at the end of the surveyed period.
Regarding the remaining category, the proportion of individuals who successfully held a job started at 40% in 1980, followed by a significant growth to 50% in 1990, and a final rise by 5% in 2000, which was the highest rate among the 3 different employment statuses.
