The bar charts illustrate the proportions of men and women holding driving licenses in a European country from 1976 to 2006, and compare the percentage of young drivers aged 17 to 20 in 1996 and 2006.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the ownership of driving licenses among both genders over the period, with men consistently outnumbering women. However, the proportion of drivers falling into the age group of 17 to 20 recorded a slight decrease in both sexes between 1996 and 2006.
In 1976, 70% of men possessed driving licenses, which was more than double the figure for women, at 30%. While the percentage of licensed male drivers steadily rose, peaking at approximately 80% by 2006, women experienced a much sharper increase, climbing to 60% in the same year. As a result, the gap between the two genders narrowed significantly over time.
Regarding the younger age group, the proportion of male drivers aged 17 to 20 fell slightly from around 50% in 1996 to just over 40% in 2006. A similar downward trend was observed among young women, whose percentage dropped more rapidly from around 30% to 20% during the same period.
