The three pie charts show the distribution of new-car sales in Australia in 1994, 2004 and 2014.
Overall, sedans remained the biggest segment but their share fell steadily, while SUVs expanded strongly; the proportion for “others” edged up and then stayed unchanged. Total sales rose markedly.
In 1994, 42,900 cars were sold. Sedans accounted for 74% (31,700), around ten times the number of SUVs (7%; 3,003) and about three and a half times others (19%; 8,900). By 2004, the market climbed to 71,000. SUVs increased to 12,000 (17%) and others to 25,000 (21%), whereas sedans rose in volume to 44,000 but dropped to 62%.
In 2014, total sales reached 85,000. SUV sales doubled again to 24,000, taking 28% of the market. Sedans slipped further to 51% (43,000), remaining the largest category. Meanwhile, others held steady at 21%, although their absolute number fell to 18,000. This pattern highlights shifting buyer preferences.
