The data displays the trend of proportion of people living in urban areas in four different countries of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines between 1970 and 2020 along with the predictions till 2040.
At first glance, the data reveals a few interesting details like in all four countries there has been a steady increase in the amount of people preferring to live in urban areas with Malaysia having the steepest rise. The graph shows that on an average for a time frame of 10 years there has been a 5-10% increase in the population of people living in the cities.
Although at the offset Philippines had the max number of people migrating to urban areas it slowly changes as Malaysia had seen a steep increase in urban population after 1990. Both Philippines and Thailand had a similar rate of migration throughout the entire period till 2020. Indonesia also had a steep increase in people preferring to move to cities after 2000.
The predictions given for the time frame of 2020 to 2040 says that Malaysians will still be in favour of moving into well developed areas and almost 80-85% of people will be moving into cities, followed by countries like Philippines and Indonesia where about 50-60% of the population will be moving into cities and at last come the citizens of Thailand at 40-45% who are much less likely to move to urban areas compared to residents of other countries.
