The graph illustrates the breakout of changes of four kinds of communication according to different age groups in the UK in 2011.
Overall, there were different preferences among age groups in the ways of communication. What stands out is that younger generation and middle-aged people mostly used internet with the tendency – the older people were the less they used internet but rather more post and telephones. It is also worth mentioning that mobile phones were the most popular means of communication for the majority of age groups ranging from under 18 to 36-60.
As for the younger generations, it is worthwhile mentioning that the youth under 18 preferred using internet most of all counting for 50%, followed by 30% of mobile phone use respectively. However, the share of telephone and post for getting in touch made up only about 17% for the former and 6% for the latter, thus being the least popular means of communication among adolescence. Regarding the age group 18-35, internet as a type of communication, interested people less, forming 40%. It is noteworthy that mobile phone was used as a preferrable way of communication counting for 30% just as by youngsters. Meanwhile, telephone and post reached the margin of 20% for the former and 10% for the latter showing more interest in using them compared to the utilization by younger people.
As for the older people, what stands out is that for the age group 36-60 mobile phone hold the same position as within younger users counting for 30%. However, the percentage of using internet comprised merely about 12% which was 4 times as low as for people under 18. Concerning the shares of telephone and post, it is notable that they made up about 35% for the former and 20% for the latter. In the meantime, people over 60 used internet more seldom just at around 5% which was almost 10 times as low as for the youth. It is also worth mentioning that mobile phone was utilized for communication at a quite low level comprising only 15%. At the same time, phone and post were the leaders among people aged 60 and over to make contacts making up the proportion of about 48% for the former and 35% for the latter respectively.
