The graph shows changes in the percentage of employees in five different industries from 1962 to 2012. Overall, services sector remained the largest employer throughout the period, experiencing significant growth, while manufacturing, the second largest employer, declined considerably. Other three sectors saw insignificant figure change.
Focusing on the two largest employers, the services sector employed more than half of the workers in Australia in 1996, increasing noticeably to almost 80% in 2012. In contrast, manufacturing held more than quarter of workers in the beginning of the period prior to decreasing dramatically to 10% by the end of the given period.
The figures for remaining sectors were much lower. The share of employees in construction held steady at 10% throughout the period. Meanwhile the figure for the agriculture workers decreased from about 12% to around 2% and for the mining, its percentage remained negligible at about 1% for the entire period.
