The bar chart illustrates the number of families in both urban/ suburban and rural areas, which have internet access in their homes, in a specific European country for a five-year period.
Overall, the number of households that have internet increased over five years in all areas. However, while slightly more than half of families in urban/suburban areas had access to the internet only a third of rural families had.
In 1999, about 15% of families which live in urban /suburban areas had an access to internet, that represented about six times higher than the number of families in rural areas. In the following year, the number of households that had internet connections doubled for urban areas to reach 30%. Further higher than the percentage in rural, which was only about 5%.
Between 2000 and 2002, the percentage of households that are connected to the internet experienced steady increase in urban/suburban areas, to reach 50% in 2002. However, the number of internet users increased slightly, by about 5%, for the following two years.
In the meantime, the number of subscribers in rural areas reached 10% only in 2001, about a quarter of the subscribers’ number in urban areas. However, this number rose over the next couple years to reach about 36% of the total rural population.
