The bar chart compares the percentages of rural and urban households in a certain European country that had internet access over a 6-year period from 1999 to 2004.
Overall, it is evident that the highest rate of internet access was recorded in urban households, while in rural areas the internet access was substantially lower. In addition, the percentage of internet access in both household areas increased considerably over the period.
In detail, only 1% of rural area homes had the internet, while in urban areas, this rate 15 times higher than rural households in 1999. Additionally, in 2000, the figures for internet access in suburban areas doubled (30%), whereas in rural households this percentage reached only to 5%. In 2001, urban areas access increased by 10% to 40%, on the other hand 10% was accounted in rural homes.
Furthermore, the access for the internet in urban households underwent a substantial rise to 50% in 2002; however, in 2003 and 2004, this rate increased modestly to 52% and 53%, respectively. Meanwhile, in rural households this percentage climbed considerably from around 25% in 2003 to 35% in 2004.
