The line chart illustrates the percentage of the population across three different age groups over a period of 80 years, from 1960 to 2040.
Overall, it can be seen that people aged 15 to 64 recorded the highest rate while the opposite trend was seen in the age group from 0 to 14. Although the older generation over 65 years was the lowest figure in the first year, it is expected to gain the same point with the 15 to 64 years old group at the end of the period.
In 1960, people of productive age 15 to 64 accounted for just over 50% of the total population which was higher than nearly 40% of people over 65 years. In addition, the 15-64 age cohort experienced some fluctuations in the following four decades, peaking at about 65% before gradually declining. It is projected to fall to around 50% by 2040 while the oldest group is expected to rise to 45% at the end of the period after remaining steady in the first decade.
In contrast, there was a slight decline from 30% to 25% in the age group 0 to 14 in the first 10 years then stabilized for another decade before continuing to fall. By 2040, it is forecast to reach just 10%, the lowest figure among all groups.
