The line graph illustrates the percentage of the population aged 65 and above in three different countries over a 100-year period from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, the USA and Sweden experienced steady growth throughout the period, while Japan remained stable for a long time before rising sharply after 2020.
At the beginning, the USA and Sweden showed a steady increase between 1940 and around 1990, reaching approximately 15%. However, after 1990, their trends diverged. Sweden experienced rapid growth, reaching 20% by 2015, whereas the USA remained stable. Around 2020, the USA’s percentage began to rise again and is projected to reach approximately 23-24% by 2040.
Japan, in contrast, showed fluctuations between 1940 and 2000, with a slight decline between 1960 and 1980. However, from 2020 onwards, the proportion of elderly people in Japan started increasing significantly, reaching 10% by 2025. By 2040, it is expected to rise sharply, surpassing 25%, making it the highest among the three countries.
