Overall, the year 2000 was witnessed an increase in all genres compares to 1996 except for romance, whose share of film production witnessed no change but ticket sales declined. In addition, both drama and comedy were dominant in terms of film releases and popularity.
In terms of film releases, drama was the most prevalent genre, increasing from around 26% in 1996 to its peak of 37% in 2000. This was followed by comedy, of which rising from 22% to 27%. In contrast, fantasy and romance were the least favourite genres, with their figures accounted a much smaller segment of the total. Fantasy films rose by 5% from 13% in 1996 while romance remained its 5% until 2000.
Regarding cinema ticket sales, comedy led the market with an increase from 20% in 1996 to nearly 25% in 2000. Drama, despite its highest released rate, only recorded about 18% of ticket sales in both years, indicating a lower commercial return whereas both fantasy and romance films has the lowest ticket sales. However, ticket sales for fantasy films saw a notable rise, tripling from 2% to 6%, while roman films witnessed an oppose trend with a difference of 3%.
