Another notable point is that consumers spent most money on food in 1960, but clothing was the biggest area of spending.
Looking at the details, as regards the percentage of expenditure on food, it started at 35% in 1960. However, the figure dropped considerably, finishing at around 15% in 2000. Likewise, spending on leisure decreased by 10% over 40 year. The amount of money spent on transport and fuel also follow the same pattern, declining from 10% to 5% and 2.5% respectively.
By contrast, the proportion of spending on clothing went in the opposite direction. Despite starting at 10% at the beginning of the period, then it reached a peak of 15% in 2000.
