This graph showcases the growing community of social media users. As it can be observed, on the line graph, Facebook leads as the main social media with more than 2,500 millions users. In contrast, Twitter (in 2022) rapidly increased its audience from 2018 to 2025. Looking at the details that are illustrated on the graph, we can deduce that people still prefer to share pictures and thoughts with the people they already know rather than becoming a self-opinionated Twitter star.
The second social media that has been increasing rapidly is Tik Tok. Starting with a few users in 2017 and raising significantly up to 2022. This could be due to the length and the content of the videos, which most of the time are fun and short. Overall, it is impressive to see that in 2022 the number of users was 1,719 millions and it is projected to increase in the following years. We do not know if, at some point, it will overcome Facebook, but the relevant growth of Tik Tok certainly demonstrates that it is actually a trendy app.
Conversely, there are some apps that have not risen significantly, for example: Snapchat started with about 400 million users in 2017 and it only gained 129 million users in 5 years, which is very little compared to the users that Tik Tok has gained in the last 5 years. On the other hand, Instagram has not grown as expected, and only gained 700 million users from 2017 to 2022.
Ultimately, the sudden rise of Tik Tok shows data on what people prefer and perhaps what the next move could be.
