The given maps illustrate the transformations that have taken place in an Australian beachfront area from 1950 to the present day.
Overall, it is clear that the beachfront has undergone significant commercial and recreational development. The most notable changes include the expansion of swimming facilities, the addition of new amenities like surf clubs and a restaurant, and increased parking space, which came at the expense of a children’s playground.
Looking at the inland features, the road leading to the city originally ended at a car park on the eastern side. Today, this road has been extended, continuing past the original car park and curving southwards along the coast. In 1950, a children’s playground was situated on the western side of the grassy area behind the beach. This has now been completely removed and replaced by a new, large car park. The central pavilion and the picnic tables remain in the same area.
Regarding the coastal facilities, the western end of the beach has seen major additions. The original 25-metre pool has been expanded into a 50-metre pool. Furthermore, a restaurant and a surf club have been constructed on the sand just south of this pool. On the eastern side, the original 25-metre pool and the lighthouse remain in their original positions. However, a second surf club has been built directly adjacent to the eastern pool.
