The maps illustrate the redevelopment of a coal mining site, showing its layout before and after the changes.
Overall, the coal mining site has undergone significant changes towards tourism, with staff areas being converted into a museum. In addition, while the car park has remained unchanged, two waste tips have been removed completely to accommodate social amenities.
Before the redevelopment, there was a rectangular staff area on the left of the map, comprising a top-left office room and a staff changing room. The bottom-left car park has remained its original state, while those two staff rooms were consolidated to form a museum. To the east of the car park, there was a lorry park which has been transformed into a souvenir shop. On the eastern side of the staff changing room was a medical room which has been rebuilt into a cafe.
Both waste tips has been cleared and redeveloped. The upper waste tip has been replaced by a large oval picnic area in the middle and a digger driving track at the top right, whereas the lower waste tip has been removed to accommodate a children’s play area located at the bottom right. Notably, the underground mine entrance has been made accessible to visitors rather than workers after the redevelopment, reflecting a shift towards tourist attraction. Additionally, a footpath has been constructed after the redevelopment to connect the cafe and souvenir shop to the new eastern entertainment facilities.
