The maps illustrate the current layout of Islip town centre and its proposed redevelopment scheme.
Overall, the town centre is projected to undergo a dramatic transformation from a linear, vehicle-accessible street into a pedestrianized commercial hub encircled by a major ring road, accompanied by a significant expansion of residential and transport infrastructure.
At present, the town centre is characterized by a single main road running horizontally from west to east, flanked on both sides by rows of shops. To the north of these shops lies an open countryside area. The southern section of the town is predominantly occupied by a large housing zone. A local school is situated in the southwest corner, while a park is located in the southeast, both connected to the main road via smaller avenues.
Under the future development plan, the central section of the old main road will be entirely pedestrianized. A circular dual carriageway will be constructed to encircle the entire town centre, diverting traffic away from the commercial core. The northern row of shops will be completely demolished to make way for a sequence of new amenities, including a bus station, a shopping centre, a car park, and a new housing estate from west to east. While the southern shops will remain intact, the residential area below them will be reconfigured. A new housing block will be introduced to the east of the existing homes, which will cause the park to be downsized and relocated further into the southeast corner. The school, however, will remain unaltered outside the new ring road.
